Same as the X14/15/16/18 they will only stop at Brunton Lane and Regent Centre.

We're keen to hear from you on some proposed changes to Service 12 within Hurworth...
The changes we are looking into are designed primarily to improve the service punctuality. The basic outline of the proposal is summarised as follows, with two options to consider.

Arriva North East: Upcoming Service Changes - Stuartphin1639 - 25 Oct 2018

Can't figure out what they're gonna do here. The options are to have the service running all east to West or one each way each hour.  Implies that that theyre not all going to be routed via croft road any longer and will form into a circular through Hurworth.

Use to go Middlesbrough let just hope don't go back to that

I can't see it but why not?

RE: Arriva North East: Upcoming Service Changes - Kuyoyo - 02 Nov 2018

Survey regarding the future changes to 'Sapphire' 5/5a (Teesside) now underway

https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/service5-5a#5bdb282d1adc6

Option A
This option involves the following changes;

- At off peak times Service 5A would be curtailed at Guisborough Market Place and would no longer serve Skelton or Skelton Hollybush Estate.
- Service 5 would be revised to operate via Skelton Hollybush Estate in Skelton at all times in lieu of Service 5A, with potential of evening and Sunday service too.
- Skelton would still benefit from a minimum of 4 buses per hour to Middlesbrough (Service 5 and X3/X3A).
- We would re-introduce fast Service X5 between East Cleveland and Middlesbrough at peak times, which as it did in previous years, would serve all stops between Easington and Skelton High St before running non-stop to Middlesbrough Bus Station (2 journeys in the morning to Mbro and 2 returning from Mbro in the afternoon).
- The frequency of buses between Middlesbrough & Guisborough would be unchanged at 4 per hour, even at peak time.
- A new link from Hutton Lane/Thames Avenue and Rectory Lane in Guisborough to Middlesbrough via a revised Service 5A route would be provided, reducing journey times and opening up improved access to the shops on Rectory Lane.
- A full timetable revision in place, which wouldnt change the length of operating day or frequency of service, simply revised to provide extra time between Swans Corner and Middlesbrough Bus Station, where the majority of the delays exist.

Option B
This option involves the following changes;

- At off peak times, Service 5 would be revised to omit North Ormesby Market Place and would instead run direct via the A66/Longlands Road between Middlesbrough Bus Station and Buccaneer. Service 5A would continue to serve North Ormesby up to every 30 minutes.
- Service 5A would continue to serve Skelton and Skelton Hollybush Estate as now, at the same level of frequency, with no planned change to route.
- The frequency of the service between Middlesbrough & Guisborough would not be a perfect 15 minutes, due to the difference in routes that Service 5 and Service 5A would take.
- Passengers boarding on Ormesby Bank or Cargo Fleet Lane would have the option of a faster Service 5, omitting North Ormesby or a 'as-now' Service 5A via North Ormesby. Not all journeys would operate via the Market Place.
- Early morning, Sunday and evening journeys on Service 5 would continue to operate via the full route as now (including North Ormesby) as Service 5A would not be operational.
- A full timetable revision in place, which wouldnt change the length of operating day or general number of journeys per hour for the majority of users, simply revised to provide extra time between Swans Corner and Middlesbrough Bus Station or to speed journeys up in this section, where the majority of the delays exist.

Interesting to see the comments on the vehicle types and there being some improvement, even though marginal.

Neither option is great but using the A66 is better. East Cleveland needs a better link to Middlesbrough via Guisborough. My idea would bring back an X5 all day. Only 3 stops before Guisborough [Brambles Farm, Ormesby Crossroads, Swans Corner- as the X93]. Then as the 5 now with all stops but a detour to the retail park each way so that everyone from beyond Brotton can get there. Keep the 5A as now. Run the 5 as now very early and late and Sunday.

RE: Arriva North East: Upcoming Service Changes - tvd - 02 Nov 2018

Ever since the old United and Tees and district days of the 65 (all stops from Easington/Loftus to M'bro) and the X56 (all stops Whitby to Loftus, then limited stops to M'bro), Arriva have been unable to find a perfect settled plan for these journeys. I think they could do a lot worse than using the idea of having both services full length of the routes with the 5A diverting through the Liverton Mines/Skinningrove, Skelton Asda & Hollybush, and Stokesley Road in Guisborough - and the 5, or call it X5, being a genuine express limited stop service from Easington to Middlesbrough.

The issues they admit to having is keeping to time beyond Swans Corner, but dont seem willing to address the fact the by that time, all passengers on the bus coming in from East Cleveland by and large only want to go to Middlesbrough town centre, not stopping and starting all the way through Ormesby and Cargo Fleet lane.

A change to the service 8 or 9 to go up to Nunthorpe or Swans corner so that either the 5 or 5A doesnt need to serve all stops beyond Swans corner would be worth considering.

The obvious flaw with your suggestion is the requirement for additional vehicles to do it. I dont think Arriva intend to use any more than the 9 buses on Service 5/5A now.

Also, the 5/5A performs the local function around Cargo Fleet/Cranmore Road, so a full express is very unlikely, unless there are two hourly variations beyond Guisborough (one via Skelton ASDA and one via both Skinningrove and Liverton Mines). Both of these would increase the end to end time.

Not sure what else they could do within the existing PVR.

It was obvious they were going to have trouble keeping to time when they diverted them via Cranmore Road without any extra time.

That works if they curtail the 5A to Guisborough as it will save 30 minutes per trip. The problem is if it saves 30 minutes that's a bus in the PVR and if they can save a bus they will.

You many be right, but the main priority shouldnt be to save a bus or two - especially on a Sapphire route, these are supposed to be profitable main routes which if anything deserve more investment.

Ive emailed Arriva with my thoughts and I know they are still considering what to do with the 5 and 5A, but the 'problem' part of the routes are definitely between Swans Corner and Middlesbrough bus station. At the other end it could be argued that Easington doesnt need as many buses as it currently gets, but they need to turn round somewhere. Theres also variations such as Liverton Mines and Skinningrove to take into account, and a growing demand for a bus to Skelton Asda from East Cleveland.

Its tough balancing all these demands with trying to get to and from Middlesbrough in a reasonable amount of time.

The retail park is only going to get bigger and more popular.
I've a feeling it will expand in to the industrial area behind before long.

However, there is limited public transport and as you say, a growing demand from south of Skelton.
I wonder if the retail park owners push for or encourage anything?

I wonder if the bus saved on the 5/5a could be dropped in to an extended X3A?

I think the X5 should be brought back, but keeping the X4 in the process. So between Loftus and Redcar it's Every 30 minutes combined as service X4 would get reduced. Then make the service between Saltburn and Middlesbrough every 20 minutes with all 3 services operating hourly, but combining to form the Every 20 minutes frequency.

RE: Arriva North East: Upcoming Service Changes - Michael Euston - 15 Nov 2018

No need to over complicate this. There's nothing wrong with the X4 despite it's summer delays. The X3 and X3A seem to work fine. Keep the 5A running to Skelton as the all-stops route. Run the 5 as an X5 during the day. Run it via the bypass and have it stop only at Brambles Farm, Ormesby Crossroads and Swans Corner [as the X93 does now] and then all stops to Easington. It is now 7-10 minutes earlier and has probably now passed the 5A. That leaves time to go to the retail park and still do the variations to Skinningrove and Liverton Mines once an hour. Brotton and Loftus have a service to Asda.
