I laughed at this:

Transport needs to work for everyone. Our future transport system in the North East
must be:
1. Easy to use. It should be easy to plan safe journeys, find out the best way to travel,
pay for tickets and get all the essential information for your journey.
2. Reliable. The transport network should be one that we can rely on to work, with buses and trains running on time and congestion at a minimum.
3. Affordable. Transport should be provided at a reasonable cost relative to the journey being made.
4. Accessible. Transport should run as near as possible to where people live and want to travel to, and where businesses are (or want to be) located. It should be usable by everyone.

That won't happen with the current metro trains...........

Also going with the metro one:

Open new local stations on current lines, re-open key disused lines, consider more Park and Ride stations, upgrade freight-only sections to passenger use and build new routes. - The Metrocentre should be top of that list before anywhere else!

RE: North East Combined Authoruty (NECA) - Transport Manifesto - G-CPTN - 07 Sep 2016

I'm not sure that this is the appropriate thread for this - moderators please move it if necessary.

Councils split on plan for North East devolution.

Plans for a North East regional mayor have been put on hold after local authorities expressed fears over post-Brexit funding from the government.

Four of seven councils that make up the North East Combined Authority (NECA) voted not to press ahead with plan.

Background (as of May 2016):- Devolution deal with North East mayor gets backing.

So the above represents an about-face.

Devolution for the north-east of England is "off the table".

I think part of the problem was the feeling that the deal on offer was pretty much a turd wrapped up in bank notes. The money on offer wasn't as well as, it was instead of.

You'd make a very good politician; It says ther matter was reviewed post-Brexit, as a result of fears over funding. So, rather than an "about face" by the Local Authorities involved, it could be argued that they were simply naive in thinking Westminster would do anything to give northerners more control over destiny. Obviously, Brexit raises doubts overall because - assuming the North East is the same as the rest of England & Wales outside the M25, then what little public money you got was from Brussels not Whitehall, anyway.
