Mind you, the post indicating that Sunderland Council have a stake would explain why the Metro service changed to provide through trains from the Airport to Sunderland instead of South Shields.

Northumberland and Durham have shares in Newcastle Airport too.
This whole renaming thing just seems to be some random councillor wanting to put his name around, presumably to boost his career lol...
