Do we know who is operating this yet? I'm guessing JH or GNE.

Although not confirmed yet but its possible another long metro replacement contract is coming up
From the stagecoach website says that in March. Fawdon level crossing will close from 19th of March at 12am and reopen at 4am on the 25th of March. This is more likely indication of a 5 day metro closure. This isn't confirmed by nexus but whenever work has been done on the level crossing. It's also resulted in the line being closed

RE: Metro Replacement Contracts 2023
The big 5 day metro line closure is here. Starting Monday 20th March and running till Friday 24th March
No trains will run between Airport and South Gosforth for five days starting Monday 20 March. The closure is needed to allow for overhead power line renewal work. Trains will return to service in the affected area on Saturday 25 March.
A replacement bus service 900 will be running, calling at or close to all stations Airport to South Gosforth. The bus will continue to Four Lane Ends to turn for the return journey to Airport.
Trains will be running to all other stations but will not be to the usual timetable. Track your train in Real Time using the Pop app. Download the Pop app here or search for Pop Nexus in the Play Store.
Fawdon level crossing will be closed during the work to pedestrians and to road vehicles. A taxi shuttle service will be available to take customers to the opposite side of the Metro tracks if the alternative walking route is not suitable.
Your journey will take longer especially if transferring between more than one mode of transport. Please check train and bus times before travelling

Swear this is like a recurring thing along this line but again. No trains will run between North Shields & Monkseaton on the 25th & 26th March to allow for the fixing of the Whitley Bay Metro roof and the station should reopen on the Monday 27th March

Not sure what time you were travelling but I could imagine they were prioritising runs out of Sunderland towards Newcastle after the game. Not to mention the football traffic wrecking havoc at the same time.
The timetable was unrealistic today and they knew the football was on so there's no excuses. Not sure how busy they were either but only having a 15 minute service before and after the game is stupid aswell.

Nexus cobbled together the best timetable they could with the limited resources available this weekend (with GNE being the dominant operator).
Obviously, on a SAFC Match Day, JH (as Metro’s main contractor) are tied up on the SAFC Park and Ride.
