That's pretty much all my parents have, now, with EYMS, and they don't even go to Hull.

Pretty similar to most middle / upper class towns really. The bus services across pretty much the whole of North Yorkshire is dire, there's absolutely no evening services anywhere around Northallerton / Bedale / Leeming Bar / Thirsk etc and even then most they've got is token 3 buses a day service etc.

People just don't use buses in places like them and if the council won't fund bus services then the obvious happens.

If anybody’s interested in a bit of bus trivia have a look at Tavistock Country Bus 112:

https://www.tavistockcountrybus.co.uk/saturdays/113-tavistock-princetown-ashburton-newton-abbot-dawlish

Scheduled to run once in each direction, on the 5th Saturday of the month, April-September only. With how the days of the week fall, it will only run twice this entire year.

The worst I've heard of was a bus every week on a Tuesday, never mind two buses a year!

And anyone's guess when it will turn up, with the Ashburton clause. I'd almost expect it to terminate at Mornington Crescent on a full moon.

I've a feeling the postbag will be overflowing if that is the case.

I wonder how much the services have been reduced in areas like those you mention, when compared with the days of United who had a depot in Northallerton?

I suspect even then there wouldn't have been much on an evening, but I'm not sure. Either way, I think demand responsive transport will be the best way forward for many rural areas.

Loads of places have faced a similar fate. Services decimated since 2012, thanks to the political choice of Government austerity. Councils would love to fund them, but they simply haven't the money to do so. They've lost around 40% funding (each year) over more than a decade.

There was a paper released by Better Transport years ago, questioning whether what Councils have done is actually legal: https://bettertransport.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/legacy-files/research-files/11.09.26.bus-cuts-legal-duties.pdf
