Interesting to see the 51 has nothing and there's a local councillor bragging how he 'saved the route' on Facebook. So either Arriva has won the tender(s) and they've bid it as the current 51 (wouldn't need another bus), Nexus has had a change in heart or Arriva has took it on commercially or it's coming later, but it's going to be tight timing wise.

Do we know if Arriva were planning to withdraw the Holystone-Newcastle section if the changes went ahead?

I'd be surprised if they did as I've seen it a few times over the past week and each time it has been pretty busy. A couple of Streetlites leaving Newcastle at peak times had few seats left (although maybe it could be because of cancellations?)

Not aware as far as I know. It'll cause problems though as it's slots interworking where the other 54 was so unless they made a 75/135 minute round trip then problems were going to come and that's pretty much Shiremoor Metro anyway.

If Arriva is going for the tender it made sense to keep them together, it was a bizarre move imo and benefited no-one. Heck even withdraw the W2 altogether since it's walking distance to other buses anyway and is pointless in comparison.

To be honest, a re-increased 55 between Newcastle and Forest Hall (every 15-20 mins) with an hourly extension to Whitley Bay would've made more sense with GNE picking up Wiltshire Drive to Newcastle.

Unless GNE, Arriva and Nexus have other plans, a big trick has been missed to use this as an opportunity to sort the Coast Road out with a clean 5 minute service & joint ticketing.

With an extended 55, options could've been.....

Option 1:
- 22 - every 20 minutes to Cobalt and every 20 to Hadrian Park
- 306 - every 20 minutes and omitting Battle Hill
- 308 - every 20 minutes
- 309 - every 20 minutes and via High Farm
- 310 - every 20 minutes and via Wiltshire Drive

Option 2:
- 306 - every 20 minutes and omitting Battle Hill
- 308 - every 20 minutes
- 309 - every 30 minutes and via High Farm
- 310 - every 30 minutes and via Cobalt (combined 10/20 frequency with 309)
- 311 - every 30 minutes with Hadrian Park kept on the Coast Road network but via Wiltshire Drive

Believe cancellations from Blyth and Jesmond/Walkergate are now minimal due to the agency drivers and the 685 coming off. Wouldn't be surprised if the 43 is going back to its old frequency in these changes.

Could it be to do with Arriva moving out of Walkergate and moving those routes to Ashington as I'm sure I seen somewhere that they were meant be moving all the Walkergate stuff to Ashington in march although not 100% sure if it's true

At a public meeting Arriva held in Dudley last year, the Arriva manager had said they expected to be able to return services to full timetables in Q1 of 2023. So hopefully their recruitment is on course and that is the upcoming changes.

Unless I've missed the works, can't see anything going to Ashington anytime soon there's not the space for it as far I'm aware.

Assuming they're going to be extending into the yard next to it and that's where the electric buses will be going as there's no space for electric vehicles at Blyth either.

But then again unless they displace all the Pulsar's out of Blyth then there's no space either for them plus the Streetlite's either.

So who knows tbh.

For anything to be moved from Walkergate expansion needs to happen at Ashington or Blyth. Certainly nothing will be moving from there by the end of March.

The changes are almost certainly linked to frequency, which as pointed out was promised to be returned to normal on the 43/44/45 by around this time.

43 (marked as 42 om bustimes.org) has had the Kirkhill part added onto it now. I'm wondering if the 43 will replace the 2 between Morpeth * Kirkhill

That's a bus times error.
When you look the service up on the official website, no mention of the 42 or Kirkhill.

Just the 43 as usual.
