Thanks.  Learnt something new about bustimes.org today - found the above items on bustimes.org listed as Short Notice changes.  Also note there are similar ones for Stagecoach CNL 685 as short notice changes.

Who is running it? Carlisle or Slatyford?

On Monday to Saturday, the full route hourly service has 3 x Carlisle and 2 x Slatyford so I would expect the same.

The text below appeared on Stagecoach CNL dated 11 Oct 2024:


"685 Carlisle - Newcastle: A revised timetable will be introduced to improve punctuality of this service. There will also be a minor route change around Melkridge. In addition, Sunday services will operate as through journeys to Newcastle rather than Hexham funded by Northumberland County Council. Updated timetable available to view soon."

Heard Stagecoach have planned changes at most of the NE depots in January 2025.

Wonder if they've got funding to advance some of the services to pre-covid frequencies.

Well they can’t exactly cut much else from Hartlepool as they struggling to keep on time and buses full for some journeys as it is.  Hopefully some more services although probably unlikely.

Yeah it is a fully contracted service by Nexus.

Whoever responded to your email is probably not lying deliberately - it's more likely that they just don't have a clue. I've found in the past Nexus staff are generally incompetent.

Which is laughable really, if that's the case.

Everytime I see those services, they've heavy loadings in both directions. More so in the Summer of course.

It's one of those services that could have been improved commercially, but where's the incentive to do that, when there's BSIP money to be spaffed.

Summer loadings are daft, hence all the deckers out on them.

I get the funding for winter but not for summer.. like you said, Stagecoach could use their own cash to improve it, even if it was only from Easter until September for example.

I keep saying it, but if they really want to make a proper open top service, they need a direct route along the coast using only the open top buses during the summer. Call it the E3 and it'd relieve the other services from some of the tourism of people wanting to go to the beach.

The E services are not recieving any BSIP money. The registration states no subsidy.

The X24 is BSIP funded onna Sunday. However, on VOSA, this service says it is not supported by subsidy. Therefore, it’s possible that the E changes are BSIP.

71 (72, 72A, 87) - Following discussions with Ward councillors and Nexus, Service 72/72A revised to operate via Stamfordham Road (Golf Course) and Hillhead Road towards Chapel House, omitting Hillhead Estate, in order to improve reliability. Services towards the City Centre will still operate their current route. There will be other minor reliability based changes to all routes, with Monday to Friday morning buses on all services generally operating slightly earlier until around 1000.

516 - Monday to Saturday service. Minor timetable changes to Monday - Saturday afternoon peak trips for improved on-time running.

960 - Revised timetable to pm journey into South Shields to improve reliabiliiy. Miscellaneous Works Contract.

23 - Minor intermediate timetable changes to provide additional reliability.

E1/E2/E6 - Minor timetable changes to all services to improve reliability.

So the E's staying the same, that now leaves 10 Yutongs spare - hopefully will be used on a local route - or having 10 a day in the depot is a waste of time and money.


Wonder what the 18 change is around Grindon?

All I can think of is they're changing the loop so it either avoids Chester Road or goes straight up Greenwood.

You get 4 minutes to do the loop and often lose most of it at the roundabout outside the Hastings Hill, so you just play catch-up rest of it.

Would make sense for it to go via Tay Road - Gleneagles road - Chester Road (Aldi) - Greenwood road then back on to Gleneagles road then on to Grindon lane in to Pennywell.
