A public meeting has focused on improving a town's bus service
Residents of Haltwhistle gathered at the library's Community Hub on Friday, March 14 to discuss the future of the 685 bus service.
The meeting was organised as a follow-up to a public transport consultation held on January 17.
Councillor Martin Gannon, Deputy Mayor and Cabinet Member for Transport of the North East Combined Authority (NECA), attended in an official capacity.
The event was hosted by Rachel Mathieson, Labour candidate for the upcoming council elections.
Cllr Gannon highlighted that the 685 bus service is currently a private enterprise, limiting NECA's influence.
However, he noted that this would change in the coming years as the Mayor, Kim McGuinness, and NECA are set to take some control over bus services.
The meeting concluded with the decision to establish a Public Transport Action Group.
The group aims to 'maintain momentum' and exert pressure on Stagecoach and Northumberland County Council for immediate changes.
These changes include real-time bus arrival times at stops, an easier payment system, a review of the 685 service timetable, and ensuring enough capacity for schoolchildren during peak hours.
Rachel Mathieson will lead the Public Transport Action Group, and will organise a follow-up meeting with representatives from Stagecoach and Northumberland County Council.

(20 Mar 2025, 12:39 pm)Storx wrote Surely they'll be the buses, can't see why they'd go back to Sunderland? They've been displaced by the electrics.
(20 Mar 2025, 6:24 pm)ReDemPTiion wrote Were the Yutongs not to displace some of the gas buses or have they changed the plans? It makes sense to leave them at Slatyford but at this point with the amount of buses moving around who knows.
They’ve still got 27728 and 27738 whenever that re-enters service.
27727/29/30/36/37 are at Slatyford but I’m sure once 24115 comes back out, 26068 potentially 19386/19388 there wouldn’t be a need for them? And with us losing the 35 very soon we’re going to have too many buses.
(20 Mar 2025, 6:35 pm)Storx wrote Not too sure, I've always assumed, and admit there's nothing to back this up, that the 64/65 Plates from Stockton will eventually end up at Sunderland. Noticed that Walkergate swapped 5 of them for the 11 Plates, in recent weeks, which would hint that's where they're going. It would also kind of make sense aswell since it's an upgrade even known it's only a year or so over the gas buses which are going. Seems the Yutongs have knocked out the 11 Plates and bizarrely some E200's, with the remaining there all over the shop, so who knows tbh.
Can't see who else would want them since Hartlepool is a no go, both the Newcastle depots have the Euro 6 issues and I'm not sure South Shields needs anything bar the Darts but unsure a full size saloon is the answer for them either.
