Brooklands Bus Museum Spring Gathering Review

The Brooklands Bus Museum Spring Gathering was another very enjoyable event, helped enormously by clear skies, sunshine and surprisingly warm weather for the time of year, which made for an excellent day for both visitors and photography.

A major highlight was the presence of Reading Buses celebrating its 125th Anniversary, with Alexander Dennis Enviro400EV “4” (RG04 ZEB) appearing in its striking anniversary livery. It was a real standout vehicle and attracted plenty of attention throughout the day.

Another major theme of the event was the celebration of Green Line and its anniversary year, with a strong variety of vehicles carrying Green Line livery in attendance. Particularly notable was Arriva Kent & Surrey’s 4106 (SN17 MKE), presented in heritage Green Line livery for the 724 service to Heathrow Airport, which was a fitting tribute and one of the standout modern vehicles on display.

Stagecoach London once again delivered a strong and varied showing, bringing not only the regular Selkent special liveried vehicles that have become a feature of these events, but an especially impressive selection this year, including Ambassador (12345), Diplomat (11066), Envoy (11011), East London Ambassador (12400), Spirit of London Remembering 7/7 (11377), and Wright Electroliner (82112) in Macmillan Cancer Support livery. Together they created one of the strongest operator-presence displays of the event.

Another strong feature was the excellent showing from Arriva Kent & Surrey overall, who brought a very good mix of modern and preserved vehicles, adding both variety and depth to the line-up.

Other notable mentions go to Go-Coach for bringing the interesting WrightBus Rightech RB6 electric minibus, which attracted plenty of attention as a less commonly seen vehicle type.

One of the true stars of the event, however, was THM 515M, the remarkable Daimler Fleetline-MCW rebuilt in 1991 for the “Supercar” One Day Travelcard promotional advert. With its Fleetline front end, London Underground tube carriage centre section, and Network SouthEast train front end at the rear, it remains one of the most unique road vehicles in preservation. It garnered huge attention throughout the day and, as a result, required a good deal of patience to photograph properly — though it was well worth the effort.

The North East also had a welcome, if small, presence at the event, which added a personal point of interest. Former Garnetts Coaches Volvo B7TL Wright Gemini (LX05 FBL) was a pleasing sight, alongside former Go-Ahead London WVL172 and former Go North East 6942 (LX54 HAA), itself formerly Go-Ahead London PVL390, both now preserved. It was particularly good to see North East-linked vehicles represented among such a nationally diverse line-up.

With over 140 buses in attendance, the scale of the event was impressive. What made this year especially interesting was that more than 50% of the vehicles present had not attended either of the previous two events I’ve been to. That made the line-up feel much fresher and more engaging, and rewarded repeat visitors with plenty that was new to see and photograph.

Beyond the display itself, the event offered much more than static exhibits. The free shuttle network was a real asset, with free Service 462 linking Weybridge Station and Library with the museum using both heritage and modern accessible buses, alongside new-for-this-year free heritage links to Cobham and West Byfleet. The additional feeder service operated by First Bus London added even more connectivity for visitors.

The wider event programme was also a major strength. The bus tours using the museum’s beautifully restored 1925 Dennis 4-ton and 1930 AEC Regent added a unique historical dimension, while heritage trips beyond the museum site, taxi rides in the historic London Beardmore cab, and behind-the-scenes workshop tours all added to the depth of the day. For families, the Children’s Area, balloon modelling and the ever-unpredictable Professor Crump helped ensure there was something for all ages, making the event feel much broader than a traditional enthusiast gathering.

That said, there were some recurring frustrations. Bus parking was again too cramped, with vehicles positioned very close together, which impacted photography and, in some cases, limited appreciation of the vehicles themselves. Stewarding was also an issue at times, with repeated obstruction of photographers, which detracted from the experience and is something that would benefit from review at future events.

Overall though, despite those criticisms, this was a very strong Spring Gathering with an excellent turnout, some exceptional visiting vehicles, a much-improved variety of exhibits, an extensive supporting programme beyond the displays, and ideal weather conditions. I thoroughly enjoyed the event and would recommend it to anyone in the North East enthusiast community considering making the trip in future. The Spring Gathering is, in my view, the event to aim for, as the Summer and Autumn events are generally not as well attended. An overnight stay is advisable, and I tend to stay in Weybridge town centre, which works well as a base for the event. For anyone considering going in future, it is well worth the journey.

The ALBUM Conference took place earlier this week at the Sheration Grand Hotel in Edinburgh, coincidently I was also in Edinburgh on both days so I decided to go up the to event to get some photos of the Buses that were in attendance from Alexander Dennis, Wrightbus, Volvo, Switch Mobility and Yutong with latter being our very 5808 (NL72 EUD) from Go North East.

https://flickr.com/photos/adammalarkey/a...0307827142

I have to say I was quite impressed with the vehicles that were in attendance with only one downside being from Alexander Dennis and there insufficient buggy space on there demonstrator instead focusing the space for those who have a guide dog, while I appreciate it improves accessibility on board buses for guide dog user however it doesn't for buggy/pushchair users with no mention of the latter on notices on board the bus, I would also say Alexander Dennis have also put a focus into cramming as many seats in the lower deck as they can despite the vehicles having a high seating capacity upstairs as shown in my photos, could've easily sacrificed two seats downstairs to provide more sufficient space for all users, obviously when it comes down to an operator making an order for the E400 FCEV then I guess this area could be better tailored to there requirements with accessibility in mind.

With Wrightbus there Hydroliner/Electroliner vehicles looked the part and I think they'll definitely be a one to watch in the coming months as they are coming off of the back of the failed Wright Streetair so for me they have a point to prove in the "Electric Vehicle" sector compared to there competitors at Alexander Dennis and Yutong who have seen great success in over past 3 years.

Also on the watch list is Volvo with the BZL as this was initially launched a year ago it has only just begun to take orders despite very few operators having actually took the vehicle on demonstration for testing purposes, Lothian have both the Double/Midi Single Deck variants on demonstration at the moment have done for a few months now whilst Stagecoach South have a Full-Sized Single Deck in use however Stagecoach have also placed a massive order on the BZL's with new buses in service at Kilmarnock and orders in place for Cambridge and Stockport in the coming months going into 2024, quite the risk to be taking from an operators perspective on an otherwise unproven vehicle however having sampled a few of the Stagecoach examples in Kilmarnock on Tuesday I was quite impressed by them and are certainly an alternative to the Yutong E10.

You have Yutong who seem to be having great success with there E Range owing to the vehicles lasting range from what few people I had the chance to speak to whilst taking photos said and Yutong are expecting further orders to be made in the forthcoming months, I certainly hope to see more of them here in the North East as I quite like them on the 53/54 & Q3.

Finally we have Switch Mobility formerly known as Optare with there MetroCity EV which out of all of the E-Bus providers we have here in the UK seem to be struggling the most in securing orders for there buses with only Abellio and Metroline in London taking orders thus far despite the Metrocity EV being on the market since 2019, the guy I spoke to from Switch didn't seem to know a reason as to why other operators are not taking orders for there bus other than it's potentially because there are better alternatives on the market and that they are no longer providing anything the size of a Solo, which he did state they are looking at getting back into that side of the market to which I was baffled by when the Mini Version of the Metrocity EV was supposed to be the Solos replacement.

To celebrate the joint 50 year anniversaries of the Leyland National and the Lillyhall factory we are organising a unique FREE EVENT, LN50, to take place in Whitehaven on the Bank Holiday weekend of 30th April to 1st May, 2022. We anticipate a large selection of vehicles to be either on display along the historic harbour side or running free services round the town and further afield. This will include one of the largest gatherings of Leyland Nationals since the factory closed, comprising vehicles from the earliest to the latest, with a few one-off surprises, and our own collection. There will be other Leyland types too, from Atlanteans to Olympians, a selection of historic, preserved Cumberland vehicles and an emphasis of buses from the major groupings at the time of the Leyland National’s heyday - in particular from the National Bus Company and the PTEs that ran services in the our major conurbations.

General thread for discussion of bus events elsewhere

I headed to Scarborough today for the 'Scarborough BusFest' today. The second consecutive year that I've attended, and I see it is only the third year they have been running the event. The BusFest utilises a decent size square car park, which is just up the bank adjacent from Peasholm Park.

I thoroughly enjoyed the day. There was again a decent turn out of preserved vehicles, and I managed to have a ride on ex-First Volvo Olympian/Alexander RL (R641 HYG), ex-EYMS Dennis MPD/Plaxton (W471 UAG) and two runs on Bristol LH6L/ECW (AFB 586V). I also managed a quick service bus trip on a Shoreline Suncruisers, ex-Lothian, Dennis Trident 2/Plaxton President (V522 ESC).

The event is really well organised in my opinion and there were a good number of stewards about for assistance. The site layout was OK, but it could have done with a bit more spacing in between some of the buses, and the actual location of the site is really good for photos. It is ideally placed to photograph vehicles entering and exiting the site. There were a number of trade stalls, and also an ice cream van for snacks, drinks, etc. The programme for the rally was reasonably priced at £3 and it provided a timetable for the bus services leaving the site, and what vehicle was allocated to each run. It is well worth purchasing the programme for this reason.

The only negative that I can think of, is that there was only a single current service bus, in the form of a Scarborough & District E200MMC. This was used as a rally control vehicle, therefore did not run out on the day, and was difficult to really have a look at. Despite growing up with Atlanteans, Nationals, Olympians, etc, I am just as interested in modern buses, so it was a bit disappointing not to see any. A Coastliner B5TL was present last year, and I enjoyed having a ride round the coast on that.

As a potential improvement, it would be nice if the bus routes officially stopped on the seafront. If you don't visit Scarborough much or at all, then it is worth having a walk up and down, and having a bit of the 'seaside resort' experience! Thoroughly enjoyed a quick visit to the arcades, and also the fantastic curry and chips purchased - just watch out for those seagulls!
